In my opinion, and more because of the fact that we use them, but i think Vidahost is the best UK webhost and there service is amazing as well as the prices.

Who do you use or would you recommend?

I'm not sure what webhosts are like in the UK (or here for that matter), as I've never used one before, but I'll go with Vidahost, because without them, this site wouldn't be running, and I wouldn't be able to post.

    Good choice :D

You never run your own website before? Not even one to tell people who you are or anything?

No, I'm not really into making my own website (HTML coding looks difficult), but if I got the chance to learn, I'd take it.

I didn't make this website, it's a vbulletin forum package, with a portal front end which you can download, and a style, and i edited a few templates but that's all i needed to know to get this site working.

I do know html and parts of php which can help, as well as css, but it is not a must.

Don't need to know much about design and coding, you know what looks good in your opinion and you pick things up as you go along. No one helped me with this site and/or the forums.

http://www.heartinternet.co.uk/ are a good host, apart from being reliable and cheap they offer Cpanel and all the tools that brings with it like Joomla, Wordpress and various forums and carts....a total n00b can have a forum up and running there easily, it's pre-installed and just requires activating.

A really nice Wordpress site skinned and with a cart and forum could be easily online and running in a day or so with a little work reading manuals.
Always better to have a clue and be able to fix your own stuff when it breaks, but they also backup and have excellent support which is important if the site is commercial.

I guy I was building a site for used these people and that's how I got to talk to their support.

I don't know how it is in the UK, but here in the States I use 1and1.com which is an international webhost with a UK branch. I've been with them since before they officially launched and gave me a free promo package, and when that first year ended I was pleased and stuck with them. I don't really know what makes one webhost better than another, but I've never experienced any downtime with them. I should really merge it with my blog and make a full personal site/portfolio/demo reel, right now it's an old info page for my wife and my wedding for relatives that I never took down and replaced with anything. Their hosting services are actually overkill for my needs, I don't know what 3/4 of the stuff they offer is or how to use it, but they treat me nicely and never bug me about anything and last year they implemented unlimited traffic for my account :)

I've heard some bad things about 1and1, at least about their local FR branch, mostly that the support was pretty poor. I decided to check it out myself, asked them a question about one of their offers. That was precisely one week ago - still no reply. So I guess the rumors were right. For the moment I'm at OVH (they have a UK branch, too). Used to be at NFrance but I eventually needed to get a dedicated server, and they only rent managed ones.

I never had to contact 1and1 directly for anything. There hasn't been a need at all, so I wouldn't know about how their support is. With a large site that may be an issue, but since I don't use mine for much than it doesn't bother me at all, and for in the US it's pretty cheap. Vidahost seems like the better deal if for UK people though, cheaper all around.

Btw, you didn't say what kind of host you need: dedicated server? shared hosting? VPS? Does it need to be UK-based or just opened to UK customers?

He doesn't need anything, it's a thread saying what he thinks is the best UK webhost which is the one he went with, Vidahost. Sort of his endorsement if you will.

Well, just don't use hosting companies with a dirty looking website. And search for reviews. I never had any problem with the hosts I chose, even though some of which were even free.

I was just about to create a new thread asking about this, but saw this thread already so i thought i'd ressurect it as i'm looking for some hosting to put up some pics of the family etc... I could use Facebook, but i want to create an artsy fartsy album so will take a look at that Vidahost.

    Any others?

I swear by DreamHost. I'm in love with their domain panel :)

I've also used Site5 and MediaTemple, they're also good.
