I'm sure it's a nice card. I'm waiting until the 960 comes out to see what that card is like. Hopefully the prices drop a bit on the 970 at that point.

Im just trying to work out a build that can play ARMA 3 on ultra with high fps and the R9 is decent enough but I wasnt sure if there was a considerable difference to the 970

    There isn't a considerable difference between R9 290 or even R9 290x and GTX 970. R9 280x is more in range with GTX 960.

I'm a huge fan of anything ASUS, but i really doubt you can go wrong with any of those. As long as they dont come with the reference cooler and are factory OC'd you are good to go with either.

I have the mini itx 970. I really like it, low TDP which is good for me and the performance is really great for it's size.

It's a good choice. Still one of the best bang-for-your-buck options available. AMD may have some better in terms of pure FPS per dollar, but to me the overall support matters a lot. Nvidia releases driver updates far more frequently, they have Shadowplay which is pretty nifty (I often just use it to check out my FPS in different games), and a bunch of nice features that came with Maxwell (MFAA, DSR, etc.).
