What websites are you going on? :p I don't think I've had a single virus on this laptop.

Each to his own though :)

AVG can be a resource hog, Comodo can be quite nice (from time to time). Tried Avast in its early days and haven't used it since so i have no idea how it works nowadays. As for Avira, it seems to hate our Launchpad Enhanced (look at my avatar and sig and you'll know what I'm talking about) with a passion, it blocks it from the get-go and continues to make problems even when you add everything to exceptions.

If i had to chose a free one, it would have to be MS Essentials, it uses almost no resources and still gives you that warm fuzzy feeling that your computer is protected.

I've been using Avast for the past ~5 years, haven't got a single virus since, and I download some sketchy stuff from time to time.

    You are totally correct. :)
For me, it was free because I've won a free 1 year license from a giveaway. Sometimes ESET give keys away. :D

not convinced by the free products, will continue to buy ESET unless they one day screw it up by making it intrusive

I've been using Avira for several years, but about a year ago uninstalled it. Best free antivirus is your brain+properly configured web browser (the right one).

I use COMODO Internet Security for a few years. I think, this free antivirus and firewall is sufficient for domestic use.
But as denis wrote, browser configuration (and brain use) is important :)
