Team Fortress 2 is always a good one. If you can find the willpower to fight your way through the initial onslaught of people making cliché jokes about hats, the game actually is really balanced and I find it really fun.

I've also been playing Dirty Bomb the last couple of days. It's new on Steam, pretty good.

don't forget the new Unreal Tournament Alpha (which is free and going to be free) hosting is a breeze too, and it plays like the UT99 with pretty and smooth added :)

My favorite F2P is definitely Heroes & Generals. Available on Steam or you can play through stand alone client.

The main element of the game (the Heroes) is a FPS. Some very large maps and get get over 30 players in a match. There is an RPG element when leveling up your soldier and you can choose different career paths (Infantry, Recon, Tanker, Fighter Pilot, Paratrooper).

There is also a strategy side to the game (the Generals) where you can move squad too different battle locations over a world map - which will result in battles that you can then join with your hero. The concept is incredible, however the Generals side really needs to be fleshed out a bit more (game is still in development so I'm sure it will happen). You also don't have to play the generals side at all if you prefer just to FPS.

It can be a bit grindy, particularly after a recent update - but it's definitely a game I would recommend checking out!
